At the beginning of 2001, Mercedes unveiled its latest generation of their iconic open top sports car, the R230 SL Class. Sporting the sleek and classic dimensions of its forebears, in typical MB fashion the car came with an array of cutting edge technology and a host of engine options. In 2004 however, they decided to roll out the big guns….the flagship of the SL range…..the SL65 AMG.
Utilising the mesmerising hand built 12 cylinder AMG biturbo engine, Mercedes were able to achieve an output of 612hp and 1000 Nm making the SL65 AMG at the time, the most powerful production roadster on sale. While official performance figures stipulated 0-100km/h in 4.2 seconds and 0-200km/h in 12.9 seconds, the vast majority of road tests conducted achieved times considerably faster.
To support the power, a host of tweaks were made to the standard chassis including a modified AMG sports suspension with new struts and firmer damping, a new mechanical diff lock and specially developed high performance composite braking system. The earth shattering amount of torque was handled by a uniquely designed AMG 5-speed automatic transmission.
The result is a very special sports car that has aged incredibly well and now offers a fantastic investment proposition.
