Following the success of the R230 SL-Class, in January 2012 at the North American International Auto Show, Mercedes released the sixth generation of their iconic flagship sports car….the R231 SL-Class. Introducing an all new aluminium body, the R231 was able to shed 140kg in weight over its predecessor. In 2017, a mid-cycle facelift was introduced with some subtle design tweaks to the front and rear bumper and lights of the car.
As always, the most powerful version available was designated with the AMG SL65 moniker. Powered by the iconic hand built AMG 6 litre, Bi-Turbo V12, the AMG SL65 achieved a power output of 621bhp with 1,000 Nm of torque….mind blowing figures in a very usable and deployable sportscar. Now mated to the seamless AMG Speedshift Plus 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission, 0-60mph was dealt with in 3.9 seconds with an electronically limited top speed of 186mph.
The R231 AMG SL65 remains an extremely potent sportscar even by todays standards and with Mercedes confirming that the V12 engine will no longer find its way into their mainstream production cars moving forward, it offers a hugely compelling investment opportunity.
