In 1983 at the Frankfurt Motor Show the latest derivative of the iconic E24 6 Series was released, the M635CSi. Under the direction of BMW design chief Paul Bracq, the brief for the M635CSi was to build on the success of the E24 model line by creating a sportier and more driver focused Sixer.
Affectionately referred to as the “Bayern Express” and “Sharknose”, the M635CSi benefitted from a comprehensive mechanical and cosmetic overhaul. The 3.5 litre, 24 valve straight six M88 engine was developed by BMW Motorsport GmbH and was shared with the M1 supercar. It produced 286hp thanks to higher compression and modifications to the ignition and injection system. The revised chassis gained from reinforced stabilisers and tighter shock absorbers along with a more powerful brake system. A limited-slip differential with locking effect of up to 40 percent for even more dynamic pace rounded off the car’s sharpened technical base. In addition, its larger battery was moved to the rear to improve weight distribution and traction.
On the outside, the BMW M635CSi was instantly recognisable thanks to the special decorative stripes on its flanks, new spoilers at the front and rear and BBS wheels with a cross-spoke design.
The end result was a truly impressive 4 seat sports coupe with unparalleled performance. It remains to this day one of the finest BMW M car’s ever produced.
